Stacey Wood, Scripps’ Molly Mason Jones Chair in Psychology, authored a piece for Psychology Today: “Why and How Impersonation Scams Thrive.” Wood discusses impersonation scams, in which a fraudster impersonates a legitimate organization in order to access a victim’s sensitive information and finances. Impersonation scams are highly successful, Wood says; she advises readers to be vigilant in verifying the identity of the sender when receiving phone calls and electronic communications.
