A Student’s Perspective on the Motley Coffeehouse

Hello all! My name is Rashmi and I’m a sophomore studying economics and politics! As a dual major at Scripps, I am always searching for a delicious, caffeinated beverage to sip on as I ponder about perfectly competitive markets or the GDP. Fortunately for me, Scripps has an amazing coffeehouse on campus that has a range of caffeinated and non-caffeinated drinks to satisfy my cravings.

The Motley, our student-run coffeehouse, is in Seal Court, the unofficial hub of Scripps’ campus. Students love to frequent the Motley in between classes, so between 10 AM to 5 PM, the coffeehouse is full of life and music.

The Motley is a completely student-run coffeehouse meaning that all the staff is students from the managers to the baristas. It is an amazing way to learn more about the ins and outs of running an independent business or to gain some customer service experience for the future. As all students work at the Motley, a core Motley experience is having a friend who is working a shift write a special message on your coffee cup or personalize a drink for you.

Popular drinks from the Motley are the Matcha cha cha and a spicy chai with oat milk. Some of my favorite drinks are a mocha and peach jasmine green tea as they are tasty yet refreshing drinks! People usually use the flex dollars, money provided as part of the meal plan to spend at the local cafes and grills at the 5Cs, to pay for the drinks. You can also pay with Claremont cash, another way to pay for things at Scripps if you are low on flex.

The Motley also serves as a community space on campus where social events are held. Recently, the Motley hosted the Mot gala, a play on the Met gala, where students dressed up and got drinks to celebrate the opening of the Motley. They also have themed shifts such as a Taylor Swift hour or a Disney shift.

Like all Scripps students, the Motley serves an integral part of the Scripps experience serving not only a place to get a delicious drink but to also get more involved in your community.
