Hello, everyone! My name is Keila Joy Fisher ‘21. I’m a senior from Monrovia, CA (about 30-40 minutes from campus). I am a double major in Psychology at Scripps and Theater at Pomona College. My commitment to the theater department takes up quite a bit of my time, as I am also involved in the 5C club, The Green Room, which is a student-run theater company that puts on multiple productions a semester. When I am not rehearsing for a show on Pomona’s campus, I enjoy relaxing and eating lunch on one of our many grass areas or studying with my friends in a dorm Browsing Room.
Every semester at Scripps has challenged me, educated me beyond my expectations, and introduced me to some amazing people. Through the CORE program, fulfilling my breadths of study requirements, and taking courses within my majors, I have been able to pursue every one of my interests and passions in some capacity. With infinite time and space in my schedule, I would have also majored in English and Art History, but through the CORE program and being able to study abroad in Florence, Italy, I have been able to satisfy my interests in both areas. The courses offered at Scripps, and in the consortium, are so engaging, that in many cases, students’ favorite courses are often outside of their major departments. My all-time favorite class was You Vs the Garlic Bread She Tell You Not to Worry About taught by Adam Novy, a writing course blending media studies with memes. While that sounds like a complete joke, my classmates and I participated in intellectual conversations about what constitutes art, and how it can be textually defined. My final paper was 2,000 words about the band Smash Mouth and the Shrek franchise. I finished that class knowing that if I could write 2,000 words analyzing a handful of memes on a ridiculous subject with scholarly sources to support my analysis, no college paper about a real topic could faze me.
Now almost four years after I first toured Scripps as a rising senior in high school, I could not be happier with my decision to attend this college. If I was given the opportunity to attend any university or college in the world of my choosing, I would still choose Scripps. No institution is without its faults, but it is during those times in particular that I am just blown away by the intellect, passion, and determination of my peers. Attending Scripps means to be among a community of compassionate, skilled, and courageous people ready and able to change the world for the better. To stand beside by peers as their equal is an honor.
Keep a lookout for my other posts and appearances in Admissions events over the summer and feel free to email me at [email protected] with any questions!
