KSPC is our radio station here at the 5Cs, and it is open to everyone as well as volunteers from the community! I have been a DJ on the radio since the second semester of my freshman year, and it is one of my favorite ways that I am involved in the community.
There are multiple ways you can volunteer, both on and off the air. Off air volunteering includes events, graphic design, zine-making, music reviews, blogging, audio production, and other super fun things. Then, on air you can have either a music show or a talk show, which are typically 1 to 2 hours per week.
Coming into freshman year, I recommend getting involved as early as possible! There are two mandatory training sessions before an aircheck, and then one final meeting. Then you’re set to go on air! While the training process can take a little while, it’s so worth it, and prepares you super thoroughly to be on the radio.
I knew I wanted to be involved in music in a more casual way coming into college, so not as a major or as a minor. I had played instruments and been in bands growing up, and wanted to continue to be in a community where people were super passionate about music. I have found that at KSPC and have loved getting the opportunity to promote smaller local and independent artists on air on my radio show.
We also host variety shows, which give student artists the opportunity to perform live on radio. It also gives radio volunteers the ability to practice with audio equipment and engineering live shows! Outside of what we do on air, we also write music reviews for new albums coming into the library. This gives us the opportunity to listen to new artists and really learn the KSPC music library.
