Hi Everybody! Scripps is always looking to increase community and connections throughout the campus and the first place they set their sights on are the dorms. Your room and the dorm building you’re in is going to have a lot of impact on your life. From your roommates to your neighbors to your Resident/Community Coordinators, they are all going to play an important part in your Scripps experience. This is why Scripps puts a lot of thought into which dorm they place students and the Living-Learning Communities help them to make more informed and better-fitting decisions.
LLC Overview
The Living-Learning Communities (LLC) are dorm halls that are full of people who signed up to immerse themselves in a certain topic or interest. When sending information to ResLife (before room draw), they ask if you are interested in any of the LLCs they have to offer. If you convey interest and the spots haven’t filled up, you will get notified about your placement in the LLC. This relieves a lot of stress for some people because they don’t have to take part in the sometimes hectic grab for rooms during room draw. Also they are confirmed to have a place on campus where they are surrounded by people who are just as passionate about their interest and are excited to take part in the community projects and programs surrounding that interest.
List of Previous LLCs
There are two main categories of LLCs that Scripps has: Language Communities and Non-Language/Academic/Activist Communities.
Language LLCs:
- Spanish
- French
- German
- Italian
The Language Communities are halls where students can connect with other peers who speak the same language or are learning the same language as them. They often practice grammar and vocabulary with each other and build a community of the culture and the lingustics surrounding that language. These communities are open to everyone regardless of major or speaking level.
Non-Language LLCs:
The Non-Language Communities range from a wide spectrum of topics but here’s a few noteable ones:
- Wellness:
- Students are able to create programs and initiatives promoting mental health services and wellness practices. They are able to work with the Tiernan Field House and Monsour Counselling to help students find the resources to make college-life less stressful.
- Science & Technology:
- STEM and pre-health students are able to engage with and support each other outside of the classroom. As well as create programs and events that invite other STEM and non-STEM students to view science and technology under a new lense. (Also the LLC tends to be in the dorm right next to the Keck Science Department which is really convenient.)
- Green:
- Students who are passionate about the environment and sustainability are able to communicate with each other and make strategies and policies that would help students and Scripps make more environmentally conscious decisions.
Living Learning Communities are a great way to make friends and solidify yourself in the Scripps community. If you have any more questions about LLCs or dorm life, in general, feel free to email me at [email protected]
