Making Friends at Scripps and Across the 5Cs

College, for all of the fun and excitement it can bring, can be intimidating in many different ways as well. Hopefully, this blog post will be helpful in settling some nerves about making friends at Scripps and the 5Cs. At the 5 Claremont Colleges, there are just over 6,000 students, while at Scripps alone the number of students hovers around 1,100. This blog post will have a few of the best pieces of advice I have gotten about making friends at Scripps and across the 5Cs.

  • Join Clubs
    • My first tip would be to join clubs across the campus, not just at Scripps but also at the other 5 colleges. Clubs provide a place to meet people who have similar interests and values but individual personalities and bring all these people together. Oftentimes you will meet people who you might not have met otherwise!
  • Jobs on Campus
    • My second tip would be to get a job around campus. Either working in the Motley, being a TA in a lab, or tutoring in the writing center. Working in these locations around campus gives you plenty of interaction with other students and I feel like I have made some of my best friends through my job.
  • Sports Teams
    • Joining a sports team, either D3 or club, allows you to meet people from some of the other colleges and provides a community of people who spend a lot of time together, which introduces you to new people and gives everyone a built-in community as well.
  • Residential Halls
    • The community coordinators do a great job of setting up events for the students who live in their halls and making sure when people are there they are meeting new people. Creating a relationship with your roommate is also a great way to meet people and spread your social circle.
  • Class
    • Lastly, one of the main ways that people meet other students and make friends is through their classes. It is helpful not only as a person to know others in your class but also helps the classroom dynamics and discussion.

Hopefully hearing these tips and getting some insight into making friends at Scripps and the wider 5Cs has been helpful! My last piece of advice is to remember to be patient and kind to yourself because it might take time to make close friends or find your people, and who those people are might change during your time here. If you have any questions or want to hear more feel free to contact me at my email, [email protected]!
