Friday Noon Concert Series – Con Gioia Early Music Ensemble
Friday Noon Concerts resume at Scripps College beginning January 27.
Con Gioia Early Music Ensemble will present “Inspired by Goethe,” with Janelle DeStefano, mezzo-soprano; and John Buffett, baritone; accompanied by Preethi de Silva and Stephan Moss on an 18th-century Viennese-style fortepiano. Roswitha Burwick, Distinguished Prof. of German, emerita, of Scripps College will be a narrator, commenting on the texts by Goethe.
The concert will take place at noon on Friday, February 3, 2023, in Balch Auditorium, Scripps College, 1030 Columbia Avenue, Claremont. The program comprises German Lieder based on texts by the great German poet, playwright, and novelist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Composers of the works include Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert as well as others with closer connections to Goethe: Carl Fredrich Zelter, Johann Friedrich Reichardt, Bettine von Arnim, Fanny Hansel Mendelssohn and Felix Mendelssohn. The concert will commemorate the 100th birthday of the late Edith Potter, Goethe scholar and Professor of German, emerita of Scripps College.
The two soloists are highly regarded artists, who also participate in performances of the Los Angeles Master Chorale and teach at Southern California universities. Prof. Burwick is the Distinguished Chair emerita of Modern Languages of Scripps College and a widely published writer on topics on German Romanticism. Preethi de Silva is an internationally acclaimed harpsichordist and fortepianist, who also has published an important book on German fortepianos and recorded multiple CDs of music by J. S. and C.P.E. Bach, Mozart et al. Stephan Moss is an accompanist on both modern and historic keyboards at the Claremont Colleges.
Admission is free and attendees are required to wear masks. Doors will open at 12:00 noon.
