Bologna, renowned for the antiquity of its university, has long been celebrated as having the first women students and professors that we associate with the emergence of this medieval institution. This talk explores the history and myths surrounding these learned Bolognese women and their association with the most famous woman writer of the late Middle Ages, Christine de Pizan. Why did Bologna celebrate its medieval women and what exactly was their legacy to subsequent generations?
