Renowned Italian author Dacia Maraini discusses the trajectory of women’s writing throughout Italian history, focusing on why women writers were neglected despite their noteworthy contributions to the literary canon.
Ms. Maraini will address how aspiring women writers lacked models (the problem of missing “mothers”) or women authors who might have helped them navigate a literary landscape dominated by male writers and critics.
Maraini will present her ideas on late nineteenth and early twentieth century influential “mother” writers including Sibilla Aleramo, Grazia Deledda, Anna Banti, Elsa Morante and Natalia Ginzburg.
