Owning Your Voice: Latino USA’s Maria Hinojosa in Conversation

From the Puerto Rican comic book hero La Borinqueña to George Takei’s take on exactly who is an American today, the NPR radio program “Latino USA,” delves into the perspectives that are often overlooked by traditional media. For the past 25 years, Maria Hinojosa has been the inquisitive mind and sage interlocutor behind these explorations. In conversation with Southern California Public Radio’s Alex Cohen, Hinojosa reflects on the 2016 election and a career in media dedicated to diverse and revelatory storytelling.

Maria Hinojosa is an award-winning news anchor and reporter who covers America’s untold stories and highlights today’s critical issues. In 2010, Hinojosa created the Futuro Media Group, an independent nonprofit organization producing multimedia journalism that explores and gives a critical voice to the diversity of the American experience. As the anchor and Executive Producer of the Peabody Award winning show “Latino USA,” and anchor and Executive Producer of the PBS show “America By The Numbers with Maria Hinojosa,” she has informed millions about the changing cultural and political landscape in America and abroad.

Alex Cohen hosts KPCC’s daily news magazine program “Take Two.” Prior to that, she was host of KPCC’s “All Things Considered” in the afternoons. Before joining Southern California Public Radio, Alex was a host and reporter for NPR’s “Day to Day.” She’s also served as a host and reporter for NPR’s “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered” as well as American Public Media’s “Marketplace” and “Weekend America.” She was also the L.A. Bureau Chief for KQED FM in San Francisco and has won various journalistic awards including the LA Press Club’s Best Radio Anchor prize.
