Women in Politics: A Conversation with Nancy Pelosi

“…make no mistake: Nancy Pelosi is the most powerful woman in American politics…” — Christian Science Monitor

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi is a trailblazer. The first woman to serve as Speaker of the House, Leader Pelosi is also the highest-ranking female politician in American history to date. She has been an outspoken and passionate advocate for women’s leadership in government, where she has led House Democrats for more than a dozen years and represented San Francisco, California’s 12th District, for nearly three decades. In 2013, Pelosi was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Seneca Falls, the birthplace of the American women’s rights movement. As the 2016 election season kicks into high gear, Leader Pelosi visits Scripps, for a conversation with Scripps Assistant Professor of Politics, Vanessa Tyson, to share her perspective on increasing the participation of women in our political process and empowering women to achieve greater economic security.

Pelosi is the Democratic Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives for the 114th Congress.  From 2007 to 2011, Pelosi served as Speaker of the House, the first woman to do so in American history.  As the Democratic Leader, Pelosi is fighting for bigger paychecks and better infrastructure for America’s middle class families.  In 2013, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Seneca Falls, the birthplace of the American women’s rights movement. For 28 years, Leader Pelosi has represented San Francisco, California’s 12th District, in Congress. She has led House Democrats for more than 12 years and previously served as House Democratic Whip.
