This fall, the Scripps Board of Trustees announced the establishment of The Lori Bettison-Varga Endowment Fund for Student Thesis and Research Support. We are pleased to report that gifts and pledges totaling over $125,000 have been made to the fund to date.
This fund was established as a lasting celebration of former President Bettison-Varga’s contributions to Scripps College, honoring her many accomplishments as president from 2009-2015.
President Bettison-Varga’s commitment to undergraduate research was a hallmark of her presidency; her leadership helped the College secure a $700,000 grant to support undergraduate research from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in 2012. Gifts made to the Lori Bettison-Varga Endowment Fund will provide in perpetuity what the Mellon grant provided over a few years: support for current and future students as they complete significant research projects.
The fund will initially support as many as 24 senior thesis/senior capstone projects annually, and more as the fund grows with new gifts and endowment appreciation.
