Gabby Giffords ’93, Gun Violence Survivor, Speaks at Democratic National Convention

On the final night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords ’93 shared her experience surviving a gunshot wound to the head during an assassination attempt in 2011 that killed six people and wounded 18.

“I learned to walk again, one step at a time. I learned to talk again, one word at a time,” said Giffords of her recovery. In her endorsement of presidential candidate Kamala Harris, Giffords added, “Kamala can beat the gun lobby—she can beat gun trafficking.”

Following her retirement from Congress, Giffords has continued to dedicate her efforts to prevent gun violence and promote firearm safety through her eponymous research center, Giffords. Watch her 2023 Scripps Presents talk here.
