Dear Scripps College Faculty and Staff,
It is with pleasure that I announce the appointment of Professor of Art History Mary MacNaughton as the Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Director of the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery, endowed by alumna Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler ’72 through a generous gift. Professor MacNaughton is the first appointee to this endowed directorship, effective immediately.
Professor MacNaughton is a Scripps College alumna from the Class of 1970. She majored in art history at Scripps and then earned a PhD in Art History at Columbia University. She began her career working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art but then returned to Scripps College in 1985 to direct the Gallery and teach. Professor MacNaughton teaches courses in 20th-century European and American art, including seminars on Dada, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and topics in contemporary art.
As director of the Williamson Gallery, MacNaughton has enjoyed planning exhibitions, mentoring and guiding student interns, designing and delivering courses that make ample use of the Gallery’s collections, and raising funds to conserve and build Scripps’ permanent art collection. MacNaughton was also instrumental in establishing the art conservation major at Scripps, combining the interdisciplinary studies of art, science, and technology. Further, from 1996-2000, she served as president of the Theta Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at Scripps, and from 1999-2001, president of ArtTable, a national organization of women in the visual arts.
Through this appointment, Scripps College recognizes Professor Mary MacNaughton for her outstanding leadership of the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery.
Sincerely,
Lara Tiedens
President
