Scripps College remains a top producer of Fulbright recipients, a distinction it has earned for more than 10 consecutive years. On February 25, 2025, the US Department of State revealed the top producing Fulbright institutions for the 2024–25 year, announced in The Chronicle of Higher Education.
Seven Scripps students and recent alums received these prestigious grants to participate in study and research projects or teach English abroad. They are currently serving in seven countries across five continents: Claire Benjamin ’23 is researching magnetic properties of triangulene-based molecular quantum systems in Hungary and five “Fulbrighters” are serving as English teaching assistants, including Laura Casaregola ’17 (Mexico), Vasti Cruz ’24 (Brazil), Isabelle Lopez ’21(Spain), Mirabella Miller ’24 (Czech Republic), and Petie Anne Schill ’22 (Kenya). One Scripps awardee chose to pursue a research position rather than the Fulbright project.
Founded in 1946, the Fulbright US Student Program is sponsored by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to “increase mutual understanding and support friendly and peaceful relations between the people of the United States and the people of more than 160 countries.”
Since then, the Fulbright Program has produced an impressive slate of leaders and changemakers, including 44 heads of state or government, 62 Nobel Laureates, 82 MacArthur Fellows (including Scripps Associate Professor of Chicanx-Latinx Studies Martha Gonzalez), and 90 Pulitzer Prize winners.
