Scripps Presents has announced the initial events in its fall 2022 season, which will center on high-profile participants showcasing diverse experiences through contemporary dance, music, and award-winning storytelling. Additional programming will be announced in the coming weeks.

The season begins with new dance works from cutting-edge choreographers responding to personal and collective challenges of the political present while embodying themes of transformative resilience. The evening will include Keith Johnson’s SERIES, a live performance by Maria Gillespie, Nguyễn Nguyên, and Kevin Williamson, and a finale of works by LA Contemporary Dance Company and Rebecca Lemme / Acts of Matter.

“We look forward to welcoming back our students and faculty with an exciting night of art and dance,” said Marcy Robinson, assistant director of events and conference services. “I can’t think of a better way to begin our season than having the opportunity to mingle and connect with peers and faculty while enjoying live music, dance, and local eats.”

This season will also highlight the ongoing work of Hao Huang, Scripps’ Bessie and Cecil Frankel Chair in Music and professor of music. In partnership with the University of Southern California Pacific Asia Museum and funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Huang will give a series of live and virtual performances commemorating the LA Chinatown Massacre.

The series will continue its partnership with PEN America’s PEN Out Loud program and Skylight Books to facilitate a conversation with Celeste Ng, the acclaimed author of Everything I Never Told You and Little Fires Everywhere. Ng, the recipient of a Pushcart Prize, a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and a Guggenheim Fellowship, will read from her highly anticipated third novel, Our Missing Hearts.

“The year’s fall series of Scripps Presents is set to showcase some truly incredible talent,” said Robinson. “We are delighted to continue our tradition of timely conversations with inspiring, contemporary authors, artists, and scholars.”

Founded in 2016 as Scripps College’s premiere public events program, Scripps Presents is committed to hosting thought-provoking conversations with emerging and established scholars, writers, performers, and thinkers. Previous guests have included Angela Davis, Samin Nosrat, Lena Waithe, and Jia Tolentino.
