For almost 20 years, the Stanley and Mary Johnson Research Awards have supported Scripps College students while they conduct independent research under faculty guidance. The projects are completed during the summer months and presented to the college community in the fall; for those who participate, it’s often a seminal part of the Scripps experience.
“A record amount of proposals were submitted [for the 2012 award],” notes Dean of Faculty Amy Marcus-Newhall. “We were particularly pleased with intellectual rationales developed, their interdisciplinary reach, and the quality of the faculty recommendations.”
The selection committed granted awards to the following students and their projects:

- Elsa Marie Hammons Watland ’13: The Kibera School for Girls: A case study of Female Education in the Kibera Slum of Nairobi
- Rachel Kuenzi ’13: The Intersectionality of Domestic Violence Legal Assistance Programs and American Indian Communities
- Julia MacNelly ’13: Language Ideologies in Northern Albania
- Christina Noriega ’13: The Politics and Journalism of Postwar Italy
- Joan Pradhan ’13: In the Shadow of the ‘People’s War’: The Effects of Maoism in Nepal
- Ei Phyu Theint ’14: Financial Literacy of Myanmar College Students
- Victoria Wong ’14: My ABC Brothers and Sisters –Hear Me Out! Preventive Health Education as Intergenerational Asian American Struggle in New York City
