At a Glance: The Scripps College Class of 2015

Each year, the Scripps College incoming class is filled with women from around the globe who possess unique interests, brilliant intellects, and a passion for service. As you’ll see below, the class of 2015 is no exception. Here are just some of the accomplishments by the newest group of Scripps students:

They speak 32 different languages, formed or participated in more than 257 different clubs and organizations, and hail from nine different countries. Nine count alumnae as family members, and one is the great-great-great grandniece of Scripps College founder Ellen Browning Scripps.

Scholastic Achievement

The class of 2015 dominated their schools, both in the classroom and on the field:

  • 25 National Merit finalists and semi-finalists;
  • 48 AP Scholars; and
  • 92 National Spanish Bronze medalists.

Leadership also comes naturally to our new students:

  • 41 editors of the school paper, yearbook, or literary magazine;
  • 69 captains of sport and academic teams; and
  • 128 president/co-presidents of campus organizations.

Arts

What do jewelry-making, flamenco guitar, glass-blowing, woodworking, textiles, and, ballroom, hula, and Irish dance have in common? They’re all ways the class of 2015 express themselves artistically. In addition:

  • One student danced ballet at the 2010 Olympic Games in Beijing, China;
  • Another student already has written nine novels; others are winners of the National History Day Essay Contest, the Arthur Ashe Essay Contest, and the Center for Future Global Leader Essay Competition; and
  • The 2009-2010 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Artist winner – her design appears on a postage stamp supporting conservation education – is now a woman of Scripps.

Sciences

The World Science Festival, Walden West Science Center, and the California Science Center Discovery Room all had Scripps women on their volunteer lists. In the laboratory, incoming students have:

  • interned as a Williams College Neuroscience researcher;
  • worked as a lab assistant at the Schmal Science Workshop; and
  • participated in the University of Oregon’s Science Program to Inspire Creativity and Excellence (SPICE).

Athletics

In addition to 14 MVPs, the class of 2015 excels athletically in both team and individual sports:

  • Volleyball;
  • Golf;
  • Figure skating;
  • Quidditch;
  • Firing air rifles;
  • Thai kickboxing;
  • Unicycle hockey;
  • Short-range archery; and
  • Track and field.

Our newest students also have:

  • won more than 60 blue ribbons at horseback-riding competitions;
  • spent a year on national tour with The King and I – at age 7;
  • produced films shown at 2010 San Francisco Jewish Film Festival;
  • taken a gap year to reconnect with her Navajo heritage;
  • sold baked goods on her own website; and
  • organized one of the world’s largest pie fights as a charity fundraiser (it worked – $16,000 was raised).
