Double Up

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) women’s soccer kicked off SCIAC conference play last week with two exciting victories. The matches, which took place Wednesday and Saturday on Claremont McKenna’s Pritzlaff Field, ended in 1-0 shootouts against the Athenas’ regional rivals.

Wednesday’s game pitted CMS against the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens. The Athenas played strong; Gabby Ozer CMC ’15 scored the winning goal in the ninth minute of overtime, and Scripps athletes Annie Belanger ’13, Madi Shove ’13, and Claire Shum ’15 were integral parts of both the offense and defense.

The rivalry between the Athenas and the Sagehens drew a large and energetic crowd made up of students, parents, and faculty supporting both sides. As the clock wound down the crowd became fiercely involved, with some spectators engaging the referees. The CMS football team also made a short appearance during the second half to cheer on their team.

The wins continued into the weekend as the Athenas defeated Occidental College with a goal by Isabel Lester CMC ’15. In honor of breast cancer awareness, the team wore pink kits.

The Athenas will next hit the road for their upcoming match this Wednesday against the University of La Verne.
