Home Run

When CMS Athenas softball took the field January 28, they didn’t know what to expect. It was unseasonably warm and sunny, and as they looked at the opposing team’s dugout they knew that, win or lose, something like this had never happened before.

Athenas were playing… Athenas.

Instead of a battle royale, though, the match-up signals the first of many Alumnae Softball games. That weekend, 19 former players converged on Claremont to create the inaugural alumnae team lead by Athenas head coach Betsy Hipple.

“The atmosphere was festive, exciting, and full of laughter,” says Hipple. “It was exhilarating to watch the 2012 team absorb the spirit, memories, and good cheer alumnae brought to the weekend.”

Led by fourth year assistant Jake Campbell, the current roster took on their predecessors in a fierce diamond scrimmage. When the dust settled, however, the alumnae – bolstered by two current student pitchers – walked away with a 4-1 victory.

“I can’t help but think the exposure added some new perspectives,” adds Hipple. “The alumnae repeatedly underscored their appreciation for the competitive intensity and the camaraderie of CMS Softball, both irreplaceable after graduation.”

As the sun set on home plate, students and alums connected with one another over their shared love for baseball and The Claremont Consortium. And with the alumnae team victorious, they no doubt look forward to next year’s game.

It’s no longer just a new tradition. It’s a rivalry in the making.
