Modernism After Wagner

Hear Juliet Koss, associate professor of art history, speak with NPR Berlin’s “The Berlin Journal” about her forthcoming book, Modernism After Wagner.

Koss, who recently concluded a semester abroad as a fellow at the American Academy in Berlin, explores the legacy of Wagner’s concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk, or total work of art, combining the arts – poetry, music, dance – within a work of architecture to overwhelm the senses and “remake the world.”

Thanks to both NPR Berlin and the American Academy for the
audio performance. Modernism After Wagner is due out in February 2010 from the University of Minnesota Press.
