“To be, or not to be—that is no longer the question,” began President Nancy Bekavac on the occasion of today’s auspicious groundbreaking of the new Scripps College Performing Arts Center.
Not even a gray April day could dampen the spirits of trustees, alumnae, faculty, administrators, students, and special guests who gathered en masse to celebrate complete with personalized hard-hats and golden shovels. Today’s groundbreaking marks the physical launch of a construction project several years in the making that will, according to Dean of Faculty and Professor of Music Michael Deane Lamkin, “signal a new relationship between Scripps and the surrounding community and offer a lively and exciting place to be for the performing arts.”
The new center will house a recital hall, music library, several music rehearsal spaces and music offices, and will be the permanent home and performance space for both Scripps’ music and dance programs.
