The People’s Choice

To his surprise (and thinly veiled embarrassment), Matthew Delmont was met by a crowd of students, staff, faculty, and alumnae as they cheered his selection as 2010-2011 Professor of the Year. After being ushered to a throne on the Motley stage, the American Studies teacher watched as the Scripps College community spoke of his passion for teaching, his engaging style, and his responsiveness to “the heartbeat” of his classes. Those unable to attend the party had an opportunity to write letters which were bound and presented to professor Delmont (along with his squirrel and plaque, of course).

Started in 2008, Professor of the Year annually celebrates one faculty member as voted on by students. “Scripps students frequently cite the faculty as their number one reason for attending this college,” says Scripps Associated Students vice president Joss Greene. “Their hard work, enthusiasm, and concern for the students’ wellbeing is the backbone of our academic program. And while recognizing one faculty member a year is never enough to express student appreciation for all that faculty members do, this event is one small token of thanks and, for many students, a highlight event of the year.”
