Scripps Expands Emergency Fund Support for Fire Survivors

Dear Scripps Community,

As shared by Board Chair Laura Hockett ’85 and President Amy Marcus-Newhall on January 14, the College established the Scripps College Emergency Fund to provide dedicated financial assistance to students, faculty, and staff facing unexpected costs due to disasters such as these devastating wildfires. We are deeply grateful to the Board of Trustees for their generous initial contributions and to all who have helped make this resource possible.

We acknowledge the wildfires that have impacted members of our community during this past year. In response, the College has expanded eligibility for the Scripps College Emergency Fund to support faculty, staff, and students affected by these events during the 2024-25 academic year.

If you have been affected by wildfires during the 2024-25 academic year that were designated a national disaster, you may apply for a one-time financial support award up to $1,500 to help cover expenses.  This award does not have to be repaid.  Eligible expenses include:
  • Temporary housing or rent
  • Food and clothing
  • Medical expenses not covered by insurance
  • Repairs and renovations of a primary residence
  • Replacement of a vehicle lost in the fire
  • Smoke damage mitigation, including air filters

As a reminder, the College launched a $10,000 loan program to support faculty and staff who lost their homes or had significant damage by the fires. If you previously applied for and received the one-time emergency loan, you are also eligible to apply for these additional one-time funds.

We are here to support you. If you have any questions or need assistance, please reach out to us:
