Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords ’93 reflects on her experience with aphasia, as well as her gun control advocacy work, in a CNN op-ed. Giffords is the subject of a new documentary, Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down, which focuses on her ongoing recovery as a survivor of a mass shooting in 2011. After stepping down from Congress, Giffords founded the gun violence prevention organization that now bears her name and has continued to advocate for increased gun control legislation. “Recovering in the public eye hasn’t been easy,” she writes. “Having the courage to hope—and then acting on that hope—has been key to both my recovery and my work in gun violence prevention.”
