Nancy Neiman Auerbach appointed Mary W. Johnson Professor in Teaching

It is with pleasure that I announce the appointment of Nancy Neiman Auerbach, professor of politics and international relations, to the Mary W. Johnson Professorship in Teaching, effective July 1, 2011. Professor Neiman Auerbach succeeds Professor Kerry Odell, who was the first appointee to this endowed professorship, in 2004.

In accordance with the terms of the endowment, the Mary W. Johnson Professorship recognizes “superior teaching and service to the College. Such professorship, or chair, is to honor a member of the faculty who exemplifies by his or her teaching and involvement in the affairs of the College the best of the Scripps tradition of superior teaching and commitment to the welfare of students and the College.” The non-renewable appointment to this endowed professorship is for a period of seven years.

Students and colleagues alike know Professor Neiman Auerbach as an innovative, exceptional, and inspired teacher. She teaches a wide variety of courses, ranging from the foundational course in political economy to “Race and Capitalism,” “Markets and Politics in Latin America,” and “Financial Issues in Emerging Markets.” More recently, she has taught “Infrastructures of Justice” and a food politics practicum. She has been active in the Core program, teaching in all three levels. Students describe Neiman Auerbach as dynamic, enthusiastic, warm, passionate, engaged, and respectful. Professor Neiman Auerbach’s record of service to Scripps College includes membership on the Faculty Executive Committee (which she chaired once), as well as chairing the Strategic Planning Working Group, the Diversity Coordinating Committee, and the Politics Department. She is an inaugural faculty member and active contributor to the Scripps College Academy.

Through this appointment, Scripps College recognizes Professor Nancy Neiman Auerbach’s exceptional teaching and service to the College.
