Appointment of the New Humanities Institute Director

I am delighted to announce that Cándida F. Jáquez, Associate Professor of Music, will be the Director of the Humanities Institute for a three-year period, beginning July 1, 2011. An interdisciplinary approach to the humanities has long informed Professor Jáquez’s research, teaching, and performance, in addition to her intellectual and professional commitments.

With heavy heart, I share the news that Sidney J. (Jim) Weinberg, Jr., former chairman of the Scripps College Board of Trustees, beloved friend of the College, and senior director of the Goldman Sachs Group, died on Monday afternoon, October 4, of prostate cancer in Marion, Massachusetts. He was 87.

After significant research and evaluation, the College has decided to participate exclusively in the Federal Direct Loan program beginning with the 2010-11 academic year.
