As we continue to hold Gabrielle Giffords and all the victims and family members affected by the national tragedy in Tucson in our thoughts and prayers, we want to share with you the ways in which members of the College community can send messages to Congresswoman Giffords and show our support.
- The College has established an online forum where you can post and share letters and well-wishes to Gabrielle Giffords. You can access “Letters for Gabby” from the College website to post your message and read letters from others.
- Inspired by Gabrielle’s husband, Mark Kelly, who urged the nation to respond to this tragedy with positive gestures, we will be placing bins in the residence halls and administrative buildings for donations of canned goods and other non-perishable foods. We will give these donations to a local food bank in honor of Gabrielle Giffords, who has “long valued and supported” similar organizations in Tucson.
- Please join the Scripps College community at a Candlelight Circle of Hope on Tuesday, January 18, at 7:00 p.m. in Margaret Fowler Garden on campus in remembrance of those lives lost and with hope for Gabrielle’s complete recovery. We invite all students, faculty, and staff, as well as Southern California alumnae and members of the Claremont community, to attend.
This morning’s edition of Inside Higher Education carries a message from me about Gabrielle Giffords and includes my reflections on her 2009 Commencement speech and her outstanding and courageous work as a public servant. Here is the link to the article.
