A collaborative workshop, “Feminism and Science: Building Bridges for Teaching and Research Innovation,” will be held January 4–6, 2011, at The Claremont Colleges. Funded by a Mellon 23 grant, the workshop will draw faculty interested in developing teaching and research projects that bring together science, gender studies, and/or feminist science studies.
Sue Rosser, scientist and feminist science studies scholar and current provost at San Francisco State University, is guest facilitator on January 6 and will address institutional support and resources for work that bridges feminism and science.
A total of 37 faculty will participate, with half from The Claremont Colleges, and the remaining participants representing various Mellon 23 institutions.
Barbara Whitten, professor of physics at Colorado College, will discuss using service learning in courses that bridge women’s studies and science. Her work has focused on women in physics, feminist pedagogy, and feminist critiques of science.
The workshop will offer panels and small and large group discussions covering curricular issues, such as developing science courses in gender studies, teaching about gender in science courses, and using feminist pedagogy. Other topics include building bridges between the sciences and gender studies; resources and support for teaching and research that bridges gender studies and science; and recent research in feminist science studies.
Participants will have the opportunity to work on current and envisioned projects, develop teaching and research collaborations, and form the basis for a feminism and science community among the Mellon 23 colleges and beyond.
