Gabby Giffords ’93, a former congresswoman and gun control advocate, is wearing orange in observance of National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 3, Newsweek reports. The movement began in 2013, after Hadiya Pendleton was fatally shot on a playground, and observers wear orange—the color hunters wear to protect themselves—in support of victims and survivors of gun violence.
“Today, I #WearOrange on Gun Violence Awareness Day in honor of Hadiya Pendleton and every victim of gun violence,” Giffords wrote in a tweet shared by the publication. “This crisis has touched far too many Americans. We cannot let another year pass without action. I will never stop fighting for a future free from gun violence.”
