Arms Control Expert to Speak on Nuclear Weapons and New Security Challenges

Dr. Nancy Gallagher, associate director for research at the Center for International and Security Studies at the University of Maryland, will speak about nuclear weapons and new security challenges on Friday, September 5, at 2:30 p.m. in the Hampton Room of the Malott Commons at Scripps College. Dr. Gallagher’s research examines how interests, ideas, scientific debates, and domestic politics shape the negotiation and ratification of arms control agreements. Her commitment to arms control research spans nearly 20 years, and began with a faculty position in the Government Department at Wesleyan University. She has also taught courses at the University of Maryland and George Washington University. In her current position at the University of Maryland, she co-directs the Advanced Methods of Cooperative Security Program, which addresses the implications of globalization.

Before coming to the University of Maryland, Dr. Gallagher was executive director of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Task Force, where she worked closely with the special advisor to the President. From 1998-2000, she served as an arms control specialist with the U.S. State Department.

Dr. Gallagher is the author of numerous articles and books on topics ranging from South Asian nuclear security to the gender gap in opinions regarding the use of force. She is the author of The Politics Of Verification, and editor of “Arms Control: New Approaches to Theory and Policy.” Her articles have appeared in journals including Contemporary Security Policy and Arms Control Today.
