The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Athenas women’s lacrosse team brought their overall record to 12-2 and preserved their perfect 8-0 conference record for the 2010 season. The Athenas are the number one seed going into the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) inaugural tournament May 1-2. If they win the tournament, the CMS Athenas will bring home the SCIAC title.
Their 20-6 win against Occidental College on April 21 puts them first overall in the NCAA Division III West Region rankings. Sports information director Kelly Beck says: “We are hopeful to be selected to the NCAA Championships for the fourth straight year if we win our remaining games.”
Scripps College students comprise half of the squad with 11 players. During Wednesday’s game against Occidental, seniors Devon Scott and Cassy Delano each scored three goals and Colbi Brawner scored another two; Scripps junior goalie Katie Campbell-Morrison set up a formidable defense with six saves overall. Scott, Brawner, Madison Shove ’13, and Delano are four of the five highest scoring members of the team,and senior Jennifer Cohen leads the team in assists.
The Athenas will return to play on Saturday, May 1 at the inaugural SCIAC tournament hosted by Whittier College. Play begins at 11:30 am.
