The Claremont McKenna-Harvey Mudd-Scripps College (CMS) Athenas softball team won their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) title in 11 years on Saturday, April 24, after grabbing two run-rule victories against Whittier College. They won the first game 10-1 in five innings and the second game 9-1 in six innings. The Athenas will host the SCIAC tournament on Friday, April 30.
CMS softball’s record for the 2010 season is an impressive 32-6, the first 30 season win in CMS softball history. Ranked 13th in the country and 2nd in the NCAA Division III West Region, the Athenas are seeded first going into the SCIAC Tournament against Whittier College on Saturday.
“All four Scripps players on the team have been instrumental in our success,” says Kelly Beck, sports information director at CMS. Rebecca Gularte and Emma Friedenberg, both Scripps College sophomores, have combined to go 22-5 on the mound; sophomore Rebecca King is the team’s starting catcher, and junior Melissa Munoz has started almost every game at either first base or designated player.
