The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Athenas lacrosse and softball teams enter the spring NCAA Division III Championships this week with competitions both at home and at Iowa.
Women’s lacrosse, which won the inaugural Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship on April 24, hosted Endicott College in a first-round game on May 12 at Pomona College. The game, which ended in a 21-18 victory, marked only the second time an NCAA tournament lacrosse game has been played in the state of California.
They move on to play the College of New Jersey on Saturday, May 15.
After a CMS-record 33 regular season wins, Athenas softball was selected for the 60-team NCAA Championship field for the second consecutive year and achieved a program milestone Thursday with their first NCAA win against Central College 8-4. CMS, the #4 seed in the regional, face #1 seed Linfield on Friday. The regional is hosted by Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.
CMS, the fourth seed in the eight-team regional, faces either top-seeded Linfield College or eighth-seeded University of Chicago on Friday, depending on the results of Thursday’s games. Additional games through Monday, May 17 are possible depending on the results of Thursday and Friday’s games.
