Political scientists and co-authors of Beyond Superwoman: 25 Top CEOs Show Us How To Get a Life, Karin Strasser Kauffman and Peggy Downes Baskin, Ph.D., will discuss the work/family balance and their book on Thursday, March 4, at noon in the Hampton Room of the Elizabeth Hubert Malott Commons on the Scripps College campus. Reservations are required for the event; please call the Malott Commons Office, (909) 607-9372. This event is sponsored by the Malott Commons Office.
Beyond Superwoman is based on candid interviews Strasser Kaufman and Downes Baskin conducted with 25 top Silicon Valley executives, including Donna Dubinsky, founder of Palm Pilot; Kathy Levinson, president of E*Trade; M.R.C. Greenwood, chancellor of University of California, Santa Cruz; Kathleen Sullivan, dean of Stanford Law School; Susan Hammer, former mayor of San Jose; Jackie Speier, California State senator; and Ann Livermore, vice-president of Hewlett-Packard.
Strasser Kauffman and Downes Baskin discovered that without exception, the Silicon Valley CEOs did not attempt to achieve a balance between their personal and professional lives. Instead, they sequenced their lives, concentrating on doing one thing at a time, and doing it well.
Co-founder of an innovative program designed to help re-entry women through crisis as they move from welfare to work, Downes Baskin also co-authored The New Older Woman. Downes Baskin taught politics for 18 years at Santa Clara University in Silicon Valley and is currently teaching women’s studies at University of California, Santa Cruz.
Strasser Kauffman taught political science and women studies for over 20 years, prior to being elected to two terms as Monterey County supervisor. She has championed coastal protection, affordable housing and disaster response, and has been nationally honored for her leadership to permanently preserve the California Big Sur coast.
