Annie Griffiths Belt, award-winning National Geographic master photographer will present a lecture on Wednesday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m., in Garrison Theater of the Scripps College Performing Arts Center. A reception and book signing will follow the lecture; the event is free and open to the public. During her 26 years at National Geographic, Annie Griffiths Belt has traveled around the world as a photographer, often taking her family with her. Belt’s National Geographic stories have included “Three Faces of Jerusalem,” April 1996 and “England’s Lake District: Beauty Besieged,” August 1994. Other assignments for the publication have taken her to Petra, Jordan; New Zealand’s Fiordlands National Park; and Mexico’s Baja California.
Incorporating humor, diversity, and compassion in her work, Belt has produced dozens of books and articles. In addition to National Geographic, her work is frequently published in LIFE, Smithsonian, Fortune, and American Photo. Belt recently collaborated with author Barbara Kingsolver on a book titled Last Stand: America’s Virgin Lands celebrating both well-known and hidden environmental treasures across the United States.
She began her professional career while completing her degree in photojournalism at the University of Minnesota, working as a staff photographer for the Minnesota Daily. During her career, Belt’s work has received numerous honors, including awards from the White House News Photographers’ Association, the National Press Photographers Association, and the National Organization for Women.
