Bringing the Social Media Revolution to Health Care

Lee Aase, director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media, lectures at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 in Garrison Theater on how organizations can use social media creatively to improve health care everywhere. This event is free and open to the public.

Aase shares how the Mayo Clinic transitioned from cultivating traditional media relations to providing direct-to-consumer news delivery to creating online platforms for their patients so that they could share their stories. He explains the Mayo Clinic’s vision to move beyond using social media mainly for marketing campaigns, but rather how it relies on these revolutionary tools to improve health and health care for all people everywhere.

Aase is director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media, a first-of-its-kind social media center focused on health care. The Mayo Clinic has the most popular medical provider channel on YouTube and has an active presence on both Twitter and Facebook. Mayo Clinic is a pioneer in hospital blogging, and last year launched an online community for patients. Aase is the author of “Bringing the Social Media Revolution to Health Care” (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education & Research: 2012).

This lecture is part of the Scripps College Humanities Institute’s fall lecture series, “Social Media/Social Change: Negotiating Access, Control and Unrest in the Information Age.” Throughout the fall semester, distinguished scholars and experts explore, both at a local and a global level, the big-picture implications and the practical realities surrounding social networking and online collaborations.  For more information, please call (909) 621-8237 or visit scripps-staging.skybox0.com/hi.
