Maria Castro, Ph.D., will present a lecture, “Gene Therapy for Cancer: Cutting Edge Medicine for the 21st Century,” at the Women in Science Lecture on Monday, October 24 at 6:45 p.m. in the Hampton Room of the Malott Commons, Scripps College. Maria Castro is the co-director of the Board of Governors at the Gene Therapeutics Research Institute Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. She is also a professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California, Los Angeles.
Dr. Castro is a recipient of National Institutes of Health grants to develop innovative gene therapy approaches to treat chronic neurodegenerative brain diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease and brain cancer. She has published over 100 research articles in peer-reviewed journals and serves on the editorial boards of several medical journals including: Gene Therapy, Current Gene Therapy, Journal of Endocrinology, and Journal of Neuromolecular Medicine.
An international leader in gene therapy, Dr. Castro has previously served on the Neuroscience Panel of the Wellcome Trust, UK, and is an expert member on the Neuroscience Panel for Evaluators of the European commission. Dr. Castro is currently a consultant in the study section of the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke and the National Institutes of Health.
