The Scripps College Fine Arts Foundation will host a lecture by Seattle artists Michael Spafford and Pomona alumna Elizabeth Sandvig. The lecture, titled “Paintings, Drawings, and Prints: Two Perspectives,” will be held on Thursday, March 2, at 1:30 p.m. in the Lyman Hall of the Thatcher Music Building, Pomona College. The lecture and subsequent tea are free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the Scripps College Fine Arts Foundation at (909) 625-6060.
Michael Spafford is a professor emeritus at the University of Washington, School of Art, Seattle, Washington. A two-year fellowship to the American Academy in Rome in the 1960s sparked Spafford’s interest in ancient Greek and Roman mythology. Spafford fused his passion for art and mythology to create paintings, woodcuts, and prints depicting archetypal power struggles among gods, heroes, monsters, and maidens.
Elizabeth Sandvig was born in Seattle but raised in Washington, D.C. and Mexico City, Mexico. After receiving her B.A. in art from Pomona College, she opened her first solo exhibition in Mexico City. In 1970, she studied in Rome for two years where she began sculpting works using transparent reins, aluminum, screen, and other non-traditional materials to produce pieces that were enhanced by light and air currents.
Scripps College Fine Arts Foundation, created in 1935, hosts this lecture as part of its mission to stimulate public interest in art and to raise funds to foster art education and programming at the College.
