Scripps College to Host Haydn Society of California 2005 Conference

The Haydn Society of California will hold its 2005 conference at Scripps College on April 2 – 3, 2005, featuring papers, panel discussions, recitals and concerts dedicated to the works and life of Joseph Haydn. This conference is co-sponsored by the Scripps College Music Department and the Haydn Festspiele. Additional support is provided by the Harper Lecture Fund and the Malott Commons Office. The 2005 conference will be held at Boone Recital Hall in the Scripps College Performing Arts Center. Dr. Elaine Sisman, Haydn Scholar at Columbia University and president of the American Musicological Society will give the keynote address, “For Whom did Haydn Write?” Also in attendance will be Dr. Walter Reicher, intendant of the Haydn Festspiele in Eisenstadt, Austria. A performance of works by Haydn by Con Gioia, early music ensemble, will be held on Saturday night in Balch Auditorium on the Scripps College campus. The conference will culminate on Sunday morning with a performance of Haydn’s Paukenmesse in the context of a church service, at the United Church of Christ, Congregational in Claremont. Admission is free for both performances.

In conjunction with the Haydn Society Conference, the Petersen Quartet of Berlin will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 14 at the United Church of Christ, Congregational in Claremont. Sponsored by the Austrian Consulate of Los Angeles, the Haydn Society of California and the Scripps College Music Department, this outstanding ensemble will perform two quartets by Ernst Krenek and one by Haydn. Admission to this concert is free.

The Haydn Society of California was formed in 2003 in cooperation with the Haydn Festspiele and the Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria. It is one of 14 Haydn Societies worldwide and serves as a center for publicizing area concerts and events that relate to the composer. Through its website, the Society also serves to publicize national and international conferences, festivals, and concerts dedicated to the works of Haydn and the Austrian culture from which he came.
