Jude Narita, award-winning actor and playwright, will present Stories Waiting to be Told, a one-woman play on Thursday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Garrison Theater, Scripps College Performing Arts Center, 241 E. 10th Street. Sponsored by the Alexa Fullerton Hampton Speaker Series, “Voice and Vision,” this event is free and open to the public. Stories Waiting to be Told, Narita’s compelling, often humorous solo performance, celebrates Asian and Asian American women as they struggle with the American dream. The Los Angeles Times said, “Writer-performer Jude Narita has a rare gift of understanding usually reserved for the best poets and novelists. By applying a seemingly boundless human sympathy, she slowly develops epiphanies that linger long after the final curtain.”
Narita uses the stage to create authentic characters who reflect a diverse range of cultures. The actor and playwright started writing and performing her own works out of frustration with the lack of and stereotyped roles available for women of Asian heritage.
Narita has received numerous awards and grants for her performances and playwriting, including two California Civil Liberties public education grants, a National Civil Liberties public education grant, a recognition award from the University of Santa Barbara, and eight grants from the Department of Cultural Affairs of Los Angeles. She won the Los Angeles Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Coming into Passion/Song for a Sansei, which ran for 24 months in Los Angeles. She was named one of the “50 Asian Americans Who’ll Be Making a Difference” by Asian Week and one of the top 100 Asian Americans by TransPacific magazine.
