Scripps College will present An Eighteenth-Century Musical Banquet performed by Con Gioia, Early Music Ensemble, at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 24, in Balch Auditorium, located at 1030 Columbia Avenue, Claremont. The event will be repeated at St. Mary’s at Palms, 3647 Watseka Avenue, in Culver City at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 25.
Performing on period instruments, Con Gioia will present a program that includes Francois Couperin’s L’Apothéose de Corelli, Antonio Vivaldi’s Variations on La Follia, and J.S. Bach’s Concerto for Harpsichord in A Major, BWV 1055, followed by Haydn’s Trio in D Major for Fortepiano, Flute and Cello, and Mozart’s Piano Trio in B-flat, K.502.
Based in Claremont, Con Gioia has performed in the Los Angeles area since 1982. Founder-director Preethi de Silva is professor of music at Scripps College and an internationally acclaimed harpsichordist and fortepianist. Performing with her at this concert are Gregory Maldonado (director of the Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra) and Susan Feldman, violin; Ondine Young, viola; William Skeen, ‘cello; Denise Briesé, viola da gamba and violone; Rich Wilson, flauto traverso; and Stephen Moss, harpsichord.
