Dr. Michael Deane Lamkin, the Bessie and Cecil Frankel Chair in Music at Scripps College, received the Great Medal of Honor (Grosse Ehrenzeichen) from the Government of Burgenland at the Opening Convocation of the 32nd Classical Music Festival on August 3.A member of the Scripps faculty since 1977 and dean from 1997 to 2007, Lamkin’s areas of musical performance include large ensemble works composed from 1740 to 1970, focusing on Europe and including the U.S. after 1850. He has special research interests in patronage in the Habsburg Empire, especially as related to the Esterhazy family, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.
The festival took place in the Empire Hall of the Esterhazy Palace, in Eisenstadt, Austria.
