The Scripps College Humanities Institute April lectures will continue to explore “Life Stories” under the leadership of Institute Director Julia E. Liss. On Monday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m., Lawrence Weschler, author and director of the New York Institute for the Humanities at New York University, will lecture on “Vermeer in Bosnia.” The lecture, which stems from Weschler’s coverage of the war crimes tribunals in The Hague, will take place in the Hampton Room of the Malott Commons, on the Scripps College Campus. “Life Stories” lectures and events explore the nature and creation of memoirs and delve into the life histories and stories of some of the lecturers.
Lawrence Weschler is currently the director of New York University’s Institute for the Humanities and was a long-time staff writer for The New Yorker. He has authored many books, including, Calamities of Exile, Boggs: A Comedy of Values, Mr. Wilson’s Cabinet of Wonders, and The Passion of Poland. Weschler was recently awarded the Lannan Literary Award.
In addition to writing, he has previously held teaching positions at such prominent educational institutions including Princeton University, Columbia University, Sarah Lawrence College, and the University of California, Santa Cruz, among others.
