Two Scripps College Music Professors Organize Benefit Supporting Relief Efforts in Philippines

As Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda swept through the Philippines in November, it quickly became known as the deadliest typhoon to hit Southeast Asia. Now, faculty and students in the Scripps College Music Department have rallied to organize “Remember, Rebuild, and Sustain: ‘Walang Iwanan,'” a benefit event on Feb. 2 to raise support for ongoing relief efforts.

The Big Picture: Photographs and Archives of Aperture Cofounder Go to Scripps Collection

Scripps College is delighted to announce the recent gift of 461 photographs by mid-century American photographer Dody Weston Thompson. A key participant in the West Coast photography movement, Weston Thompson was also a major chronicler of that era. The gift of photographs, along with Weston Thompson’s archives, provide an unparalleled look into the work of this significant artist as well as that of some of the most important photographers of the 20th century, including Edward Weston and Ansel Adams. As assistant to both of them, Weston Thompson had unique access into the work and thoughts of these art history-changing artists.

Scripps College Vice President for Enrollment and Financial Aid Victoria Romero today announced the appointment of Rhonda Risser as the new director of financial aid. Risser previously worked as associate director of the office prior to becoming interim director in September; the new position is effective Jan. 1.

Associate Professor of Biology Jennifer Armstrong received a $450,000 three-year grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to research chromosome structure and gene expression. Seven Andy Warhol Prints Gifted to Scripps College

Following Andy Warhol’s lead, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. continues to surprise and delight. In 2008, Scripps College received an astonishing gift of 150 Warhol works, including 50 silver gelatin prints, as part of the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program. Now, five years later, the foundation has chosen to donate yet again to the Scripps Collection. Seven substantially-sized prints, each created by Andy Warhol, have just been added to the Scripps College collection.

“In The Works…” is the annual fall concert by students of the departments of Dance at Scripps and Pomona Colleges. The concert will take place Dec. 5, 6 and 7 at 8 p.m. and on Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. in the Pendleton Dance Studio, Pomona College, 333 N College Way.
