Scripps College’s Ceramic Annual 2000 Exhibition Opens

The Scripps College Ceramic Annual – the best known and longest running ceramic exhibition in the United States – opens Saturday, January 22, 2000, at the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery on the Scripps campus and continues through March 5. The opening reception will take place on Saturday, January 22, from 7-9 p.m., and will include live music. Admission is free and open to the public.

The 56th Ceramic Annual presents the work of twelve contemporary artists who have had a major impact on the field of ceramic art including: Robert Brady, Berkeley, CA; Mark Burns, Las Vegas, NV; Syd Carpenter, Philadelphia, PA; Harris Deller, Carbondale, IL; Christine Federighi, Coral Gables, FL; Joanne Hayakawa, San Diego, CA; Tony Hepburn, Bloomfield, MI; Richard Notkin, Helena, MT; Adrian Saxe, Los Angeles, CA; Nancy Selvin, Berkeley, CA; Richard Shaw, Fairfax, CA; and Victor Spinski, Newark, DE. Since 1992, the exhibition has been selected by a series of guest curators. This year’s guest curator is David Furman, professor of art at both Pitzer College and Claremont Graduate University. Mr. Furman has received many honors, including three National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships (1990, 1987, 1975), and three Fulbright Fellowships to Costa Rica (1990) and Peru (2000, 1979). His work is in numerous museum collections around the country.

In conjunction with the Ceramic Annual 2000, the Williamson Gallery presents a lecture by Peter Plagens, art critic at Newsweek. The lecture will take place in the Humanities Auditorium on the Scripps campus, on February 23, at 7:00 p.m.

On Sunday, March 5, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Williamson Gallery presents the Sixth Annual Clay Day, Art, Music, and Dance Festival, which will feature contemporary ceramics and present a variety of contemporary American music, including classical, Latin, and jazz. In addition, there will be performances of modern and West African dance by Scripps students. The Festival, which will take place in the courtyard adjacent to the gallery, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., will offer clay-making activities for children, a ceramic sale by local artists, and refreshments. Additionally, First Street Gallery will present a tile-making workshop. The Ceramic Annual exhibition will also be open from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The 56th Ceramic Annual is presented by the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery located on Columbia Avenue, between 11th and 12th Streets, on the Scripps campus. The gallery is free and open to the public. Regular hours are 1-5 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday.
