After a national search that involved many members of the Scripps College community, President Lori Bettison-Varga announced the appointment of Joanne M. Coville as vice president for business affairs and treasurer of the College, effective July 18, 2011. Joanne will fill the position vacated by James Manifold, who retires June 30, 2011, after 29 years of service to Scripps.
Joanne has over 20 years of experience in college and university administration and finance, including service at a women’s college. She also has extensive experience in overseeing new construction, as well as preserving historic buildings and sites—critical skills that will serve the College well.
Currently vice president for finance and administration at California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI), Joanne has also served at Mills College, Stanford University, and the Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology. For 14 years, she was in public accounting at KPMG Peat Marwick.
Joanne began work at CSUCI prior to its opening in 2002 and oversaw all of the construction of the new campus, including faculty/staff housing units, student housing, and the renovation and adaptive reuse of the Camarillo State Mental Hospital for academic and administrative use. She called it a “challenge and joy” to work with the California mission-style buildings built in the 1930s and 1940s. She also was responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of the university’s finance, human resources, public safety, and information technology systems.
At Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology, where she was executive vice president from 1995 to 2001, Joanne established and maintained financial stability during a turbulent period; she negotiated and orchestrated the merger into a large regional graduate institution, Oregon Health and Science University.
She was at Stanford University from 1989 to 1995, a period in which the university was engaged in an indirect cost controversy with the federal government. She rapidly moved from assistant controller to university controller in 1991. In the latter position, she reorganized the Controller’s Office, resulting in budget reductions along with improved service.
At Mills College, Joanne was assistant treasurer responsible for budget development and endowment accounting. At KPMG, as senior audit manager, Joanne’s clients were primarily higher education and other non-profit organizations.
Joanne earned a BS in accountancy from North Illinois University and has her CPA certificate.
Scripps College will officially welcome Joanne to campus with a reception at the beginning of fall semester, 2011.
