Providing an opportunity for students, faculty, and guest artists to debut original choreography and performance work, “SCRIPPS DANCES” is one of the highlights of the dance department’s spring calendar. This year’s concert brings to the stage the work of seven students and includes the culmination of 3 senior projects. The variety of dance forms represented includes improvisation, modern, and lyrical ballet. Student choreographers include Tova Eisner (Scripps ’06), Katy Lind (Scripps ’06), Sara Gaynor (Scripps ’07), Mary Grimes (Scripps ’07), Meredith Horiuchi (Scripps ’07), Yael Japha (Pitzer ’06), and Kathleen Paganelli (CMC ’07). Improvisational site work, guided by Scripps dance faculty Suchi Branfman, enable dancers to explore “how we do and do not move/live/work together as a community, in our trying times, in trying situations and in trying conditions.” Students will also perform a kinetic and athletic quintet choreographed by guest artist, Stephanie Gilliland, performed to the music of experimental pop artists The Chemical Brothers. The concert ends with a piece created by Joel Smith, Scripps dance faculty member, in collaboration with the dancers, involving the irony of “constructing coincidence.”
