Scripps Student Wins Rotary Scholarship

Catherine Powell ’06, a religious studies and Black studies double major at Scripps College, has been awarded a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship, which covers all expenses of graduate study abroad for one year. Cate will enroll in the Master of Theology program at the Henry Martyn Institute, International Centre for Research, Interfaith Relations and Reconciliation, in Hyderabad, India, where she will focus on Islamic studies and interfaith relations. Cate will also participate in social projects with her host club and will visit schools, community organizations, and other Rotary clubs.

The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship program is the world’s largest, privately funded international scholarship program and dates back to 1947. Its purpose is to promote international understanding and friendly relations between countries. While abroad, scholars serve as ambassadors of goodwill and give presentations about their homelands. This program reflects the Rotary Foundation’s faith that Ambassadorial Scholars will be tomorrow’s community and world leaders.
