Laura Loesch ’09, a neuroscience and humanities major, has been named a Barry M. Goldwater Scholar for 2008. Loesch was one of only 321 scholars chosen from among 1,035 nominees for the scholarship, widely considered the most prestigious award in the U.S. bestowed upon graduates studying in the sciences. Loesch plans on pursuing her PhD in neuroscience to conduct research in cognitive neuroscience with a focus on using and improving functional imaging. Upon completion of her PhD, she would like to contribute to debates concerning the intersection between society and neuroscience.
In addition to Loesch, two other Scripps students received the distinction of honorable mention on the Goldwater list for 2008. Clio Korn ’10 and Vivian Lin ’09, neuroscience and biology-chemistry majors respectively, were honored to recognize their outstanding work in the sciences.
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, a U.S. senator for 30 years.
The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields. Students are not allowed to apply for the scholarship; instead they must be nominated by their college in order to be eligible.
